B&K lined up for Unite student tower
Student developer Unite looks set to name Bowmer & Kirkland as main contractor for its 30-storey tower on New Wakefield Street in Manchester.
The contractor and developer are understood to be in negotiations over the project, which will provide 573 student bedrooms. Subject to an agreement between the developer and contractor, work is due to start on site early next year.
A planning application for the scheme was submitted in July this year and approved in October. As well as student bedrooms, the project will also include retail space on the ground floor.
Designed by SimpsonHaugh, the site of the tower currently houses music venue Sound Control, as well as a derelict unit next door. Both with be demolished to make way for the scheme. Sound Control is due to be recolated to a new venue.
The professional team includes Curtins as structural engineer and Turley as planner.
Bowmer & Kirkland is already working on the nearby Landmark office building for Project Beach Developments on Oxford Road, on the site of the former Odeon cinema next to One St Peter’s Square.
The contractor is also on-site at the £23m Hotel Indigo near Victoria station.

With the recent report on Student suicides I am not sure now how they adjusting to this type of tower accommodation no matter where ever they are built, maybe something a bit more smaller and less intimidating? Anybody got experience of these high rise dormitories?
