BDP studio wins North West Structural Award

Building Design Partnership has picked up the Best Sustainable Project Award for its Manchester Studio at the North West Structural Awards.

The awards are a showcase for the finest engineering and building structures in the North West.

BDP's BREEAM 'Excellent' Manchester studio, on Ducie Street in the Piccadilly Basin area, was one of the first in the UK to be naturally ventilated within a city centre.

The concrete frame, cast using 'simple' technology and re-usable standard plywood formwork boards in standard panel sizes, was an essential component in the sustainability of the project.

Jonathan Pye, civil and structural engineer director at BDP, said: "Manchester's skyline is certainly becoming greener, and we hope that our carbon neutral office studios will help to encourage more and more sustainable construction within the city."

The Manchester Studio was also nominated for the David Alsop Sustainability Award at the Institute of Structural Engineer's International Structural Awards.
