Barnes wins Salford health centre contract
Bury-based Barnes Construction has been appointed by Level Healthcare to design and build a £4.8m health centre on Bury New Road.
The 38,000 sq ft facility will include a GP surgery, consulting rooms, nurse stations, offices, minor operations suites and an adjoining Tesco Express, pharmacy and optician.
Work is due to start at the end of September, with the centre expected to be completed in autumn 2015.
In Manchester, Barnes has also started on site at an extension to St Mary's Hospital to house the IVF department. Barnes was appointed by Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The architect for the scheme is IBI Group.
Barnes Construction, formerly known as Thomas Barnes & Sons, is headquartered in Bury with offices in Liverpool, Leeds and Birmingham.
Current projects include FC United's stadium in Moston, Blackburn Bus Station, Islington Wharf apartments at Ancoats and Bowland High School.
Aah, classic Salford. I see the new building is set back from the road, surrounded with car parking and a massive black metal fence out front. Some things never change.

Salford’s planners and developers do seem to have an uncanny ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. After all the good work over many painful years regenerating places like Higher and Lower Broughton, Ordsall, Salford Quays, in each area they manage to find an absolutely prime site on which to plonk an enormous great spiky metal fence or a sea of car parking giving the impression of a harsh, ugly and inhospitable place. There are many more sophisticated, people-friendly urban design solutions to providing security and enclosure but for some reason the powers there be always plump for the cheapest and ugliest design imaginable. It really is infuriating and does Salford no favours in the long term.
