BAM appointed to £30m Gateway arts faculty

BAM Construction has been selected as the preferred bidder to design and build Salford University's new £30m Gateway Building.

Gateway will be the new home for the university's schools of music, performance, architecture, and art and design.

It will include a new theatre, recording studios, performance rooms, cafe and specialist teaching space along with workshops.

A large public realm area will be used for outdoor performances.

The 184,000 sq ft, seven-storey building was designed by Stride Treglown Architects.

The building will located at the gateway to a new pedestrian route through the university, linking it with a student village and Broadway railway station.

BAM is understood to have beaten rival bids from Lend Lease, Vinci, Shepherd and Willmott Dixon.

BAM Construction director Ian Fleming said: "We are looking forward to starting this project which has high sustainability objectives."

Work is due to start on site in August and complete in August 2015.

Structural design is being conducted by Ramboll; project quantity surveying by Appleyard and Trew, and project management by Davis Langdon.
