Balfour Beatty wins Lime Street Gateway job

Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering has been awarded a £3.4m contract by Liverpool City Council to pave the new public square in the Lime Street Gateway project.

The overdue project was hampered for several years by objections from shop owners and traders who refused to vacate the units below Concourse House. English Partnerships and Liverpool City Council won a legal fight to close the shops, which have since been demolished. The Concourse House tower is currently undergoing demolition.

An earlier joint venture proposal by EP (now the Homes & Communities Agency) and developer the Iliad Group to build a new residential tower was aborted in late 2007 due to rising costs and falling values.

The revised scheme won approval at the start of 2008 and will feature an enlarged pedestrian area against a backdrop of the original Victorian arched end of the station.

The Northwich office of Balfour Beatty will handle the project, due to start on site shortly.
