Defence and aerospace giant BAE Systems has submitted an application to Ribble Valley Council for the latest office at its campus in Samlesbury, a 113,000 sq ft building designed by AEW Architects.
In 2007, BAE gained planning consent for up to one million sq ft of commercial space at the site, and has been bringing forward the phased development of four interlinked offices. The two central blocks, of around 95,000 sq ft each, have both been completed, with this latest building designed to be one of the two ‘book-ends’ to the scheme.
The application is for a 114,000 sq ft office, connected to its neighbour with a glass link. The building is set to accommodate 750 staff; around 450 will be new to the site, with the rest to be relocated from the other offices.
The 4.5-acre site is also set to accommodate a 1,400 sq ft energy centre.
According to the planning documents submitted to the council by AEW, the scheme will deliver “large open-plan office spaces”, across four floors, built around a central atrium. Externally, the office will feature “champagne-coloured aluminium cladding panels with dark grey curtain wall glazing systems”. This design will be mirrored on the other side when the fourth office comes forward, however details on that next scheme are yet to be announced.
The site sits on the border of the Enterprise Zone, which sits across both Ribble Valley and South Ribble councils. Within the Enterprise Zone, Pochin’s started construction earlier this year on the 130,000 sq ft asset management facility for BAE, set to complete in 2020. With Pochin’s now in administration, a replacement contractor is yet to be announced. The zone is also already home to BAE’s £16m Academy for Skills & Knowledge.
