Approval lined up for Blackpool flats
Revised proposals for a block of 20 apartments on land behind Ma Kelly’s Showboat bar on Queens Promenade are due to be granted planning permission by the council next week.
Earlier plans for a five-storey block containing 30 flats were refused in 2018 after committee members deemed the development to be an “incongruous and visually intrusive addition to the streetscene”.
An amended application lodged by Aidan Khan, who is listed as the director of a development firm called A & F Trading and was previously a director at Ma Kelly’s Showboat, has seen the height of the building reduced to four storeys and the number of flats revised down from 30 to 20.
The development, designed by Fylde-based architect Ben Jurin Architecture, would be accessed via Knowle Avenue.
A report to the council’s planning committee said the scheme would provide a “quantitative contribution towards meeting Blackpool’s
housing requirement”.
It added that, while council is able to identify a five-year housing supply at present, “it must be acknowledged that Blackpool is a very tightly constrained, urban borough, with relatively little opportunity for major housing development”.
