Approval granted for Wythenshawe breast cancer unit
The Manchester University NHS trust has won consent to build a 7,300 sq ft extension to the existing Nightingale Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital in South Manchester.
The extension will house a National Breast Imaging Academy for the Nightingale breast cancer facility, which is operated by the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.
The facility will be used to train future practitioners, as part of a strategy by the trust to address a predicted 50% drop in radiographer numbers over the next seven to 12 years.
The trust also cites a review of local cancer services by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, which indicated that many services across the city region would be relocated to the Nightingale Centre in the coming years, prompting a requirement for it to expand.
The ground floor of the proposed scheme will accommodate a breast imaging facility with six examination rooms, three mammography rooms and two ultrasound rooms.
The extension will also feature a patients’ waiting room as well as radiology and radiography hubs. The first floor of the extension will house teaching and office space.
Manchester-based AFL Architect designed the project.
