Approval for Hattersley district centre

Peak Valley Housing Association has been granted planning permission for a 75,000 sq ft retail project in Hattersley.

The development in Stockport Road will be made up of 14 units, including an anchor discount foodstore and a drive-through restaurant. The site is predominantly cleared brownfield land.

Following approval at planning committee in January, the application was referred to the Secretary of State as a matter of procedure, who determined not to call-in the application for further study. The next stage of the project is a procurement process to select a preferred developer.

GVA Manchester's planning, development and regeneration team advised PVHA on the scheme.

Ian Griffiths, director of GVA, said: "We have been working with Peak Valley Housing Association over ten years on the wider strategy for the residential-led regeneration of Hattersley. Today's secure of planning permission for the new district centre is a significant step forwards in assisting the progress of the scheme, complementing the on-going regeneration of the estate and raising the profile of the town in Greater Manchester."

What is a drive-through restaurant? Where is Peal Valley? Valley is a French name for a Dale. In Northern England there are only Dales, Fells and Moors. So where is Peak Valley? Or is it an artificial ‘marketing brand’ meant to impress us, somehow?

Well done to PVHA and GVA; excellent news.

This scheme is a real throwback designed around cars rather than people. As such it will do little towards making Hattersley a more attractive place to live. PVHA have been badly advised and should in any case have higher aspirations as a client in my opinion. Disappointing to see.
