Aldi eyes 76 more regional stores by 2025

The budget supermarket chain has earmarked a string of locations in which it wants to open stores as part of plans to grow its UK portfolio.

Aldi has more than 880 stores across the country and has identified towns and cities in the North West for further expansion, including one store in Manchester city centre, two in Liverpool and four in Cumbria.

Other locations in the region include Warrington, where Aldi wants to open three stores; Keswick, Windermere and Kendal in Cumbria; Bolton, Wigan, Stockport and Oldham in Greater Manchester; Ormskirk, Preston, Halton, Wrexham, and a host of other places.

A statement on the company’s website said: “Our sustained growth means we are continually expanding our property portfolio to help achieve our ever-growing goals.

“We have ambitious acquisition and development plans beyond that and are looking to acquire sites that meet the specific property criteria for our standard store format.”

Each site should be around 1.5 acres and able to accommodate a 20,000 sq ft store with around 100 parking spaces,  the statement said.

Ciaran Aldridge, national property director of Aldi UK, added: “Aldi is growing rapidly and we are welcoming around one million new customers into our stores every year.

“But there are also hundreds of towns across the UK where there is not an Aldi. We are willing to explore all opportunities, including developer-led schemes or existing retail units.”

One Aldi supermarket will open at Trafford Retail Park later this year and 18,600 sq ft store in Ulverston opened in May.

Aldi also has a 26,000 sq ft store in the pipeline in Tarleton in Cheshire after securing planning approval in March.
