Aldi advances Irlam supermarket
The discount retailer’s plans to build a 19,200 sq ft store on a vacant plot next to the AJ Bell Stadium in Irlam have progressed with Salford City Council set to give the scheme the nod later this week.
The store is planned for a plot between the Barley Farm pub and the stadium, with a new access off Stadium Way leading to a 115-space car park. The store would have a 14,000 sq ft sales area.
Salford’s planning committee will discuss the proposals on Thursday with a recommendation to approve; the new store is expected to create around 30 to 50 jobs along with a number of temporary construction jobs.
The recommendation is subject to a £62,000 contribution to improve pedestrian routes between residential areas and the food store, and the addition of bus stops within a 400m walk of the site.
The 12,000-capacity AJ Bell was built in 2012, but much of the land around the stadium has remained vacant since its construction. A further eight development plots are available.
Further warehouses and industrial developments are planned further along the Manchester Ship Canal, with Peel securing reserved matters planning consent for nearly 1.5m sq ft of industrial space in late 2017. However, Peel’s delivery of these warehouses hinges on the developer also bringing forward a rail link to the development.
Aldi is also planning to open an 18,600 sq ft store on the other side of the Manchester Ship Canal at Trafford Retail Park on Barton Road. The retail park next to the Barton Bridge already features occupiers including Dunelm, Food Warehouse, Nando’s, and B&M, and attracts around 4m visitors a year.
Nice tarmac. We can’t keep approving developments with large expanses of tarmac car parks and no tree planting.

I agree with Anonymous and whilst the biodiversity/environmental credentials on the site may not appear to exist at present it would be good to see some gain from the development with tree planting and soft landscaping rather than just the identikit supermarket and tarmac parking

After running through Ancoats this afternoon and along the canals I have experienced how much of an effect tarmac alters local climate. I therefore agree with both those comments wholeheartedly. Where are the trees? Hire a decent Landscape Architect. However, shouldn’t the Council planning team be clearer on their guidance for green infrastructure and ask for more. It really isn’t rocket science and isn’t even a big ask..

Would love to see an other supermarket accessible to Irlam and Cadishead hope it goes ahead make a change from fast food outlets and Barbara shops that Salford council seem to think we need in this area cannot move for them in Cadishead.

Absolutely ridiculous. Has nobody realised that the traffic when there is a rugby match on the traffic on Liverpool road is dreadful so goodness knows what it will he like now on match days.People using public transport will not he able to visit this Aldi as no busses stop near by. OR will GMT decide to install a bus stop now after local people have been reduced to one bus along Liverpool Road from Cadishead to Patricroft bridge. We lost the 100 so no direct route to the Trafford centre. What bus will stop near Aldi????
