Alchemist’s ‘golden spaceship’ lands at Quays
Construction has completed of a striking gold addition to Salford Quays; a £1.7m bar on the bridge between the Lowry arts centre and Media City UK, due to open in August.

Contractor Artez will hand over the building shortly to bar opereator Living Ventures to begin fitting out the bar and 100-cover restaurant. The bar was designed by Reid Architects for the joint venture owners of MCUK, Peel Land & Property Group and Legal & General Capital.
Stephen Wild of MCUK said: “As the landscape here continues to evolve, The Alchemist will bring a stylish food and drink offer to the mix, adding to the vibrant destination we are creating.”
Marion Room of Reid Architects added: “It’s been a great project to work on, delivering something that’s almost a beacon on this prominent site. It adds to a mix of striking architecture including the Lowry and Imperial War Museum – it’s quite an ‘architectural zoo,’ with one of everything.”
The building features a gold-clad roof and walls externally and a terrace, which cantilevers out over the canal.
Speaking at the launch event hosted by the project team, Mike Banton, managing director of Artez, called the new building a “golden spaceship”
I like this. A fine addition to the Quays.

Another bit of wonky architecture to add to the cacophony at the Quays. I like the building but it doesn’t work here.

It completely works there. Blends in with the Lowry and IWM which have similar roof designs. Great addition.

There isn’t a single building in any of those shots that looks like it was designed with its context in mind. No visual relationship or dialogue at all. I agree with “Look at me!”, this just adds to the visual mess that is the quays although its a decent building in isolation.

The cantilever section is where all the rubbish is blown from the canal on windy days. Will be a nice addition to the design and a real treat for the customers.
