Manchester Airport Expansion Design

Airport starts design contest for £1bn transformation

Manchester Airport has started the public tender process to appoint the design team for the ambitious 10-year expansion programme announced last week.

Separate invitations to tender have been published in the Official Journal of the European Union for architectural, engineering and overall project manager contracts.

As part of the selection process, Manchester Airport said it intends to hold an industry day on 16 June 2015 at 3pm at the Runway Visitor Park. Those wishing to attend the event should register their interest by emailing mtp.ojeu@magairports.com for the attention of George Owens, director of procurement and contracts.

The contract notice describes the project: “It is intended that the Manchester Transformation Programme will position the airport as the Northern Gateway and create a modern transport hub. The MTP includes, but is not limited to: expansion of Terminal 2 building, three new piers including air bridges, new stands and taxiway developments, new multi-storey and surface car parks (to primarily replace displaced parking due to apron redevelopment), and the relocation of existing facilities. MTP is aimed at delivering light, bright, modern facilities with the ability to accommodate future growth in line with the MTP.”

Earlier this year, the airport appointed a new framework of architects: AHR, Pascall + Watson, Pick Everard. The previous framework for architecture services contained 5plus, Chapman Taylor, SBS and Leach Rhodes Walker. There was also a new project manager framework selected: Turner & Townsend, EC Harris, Jacobs. The new frameworks coincided with a change to the senior management team. In March, Jonathan Haigh, ex PwC director, joined as director of development management and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, an interim design team has been appointed to work on the transformation programme until December 2015. It is understood Turner & Townsend is advising the airport.

The deadline for expressions of interest is 3 July 2015.
