Ainsdale site gets Homes England backing

Sefton Council is set to develop a former school through its dedicated housing arm Sandway Homes after winning more than £600,000 from the Government housing body.

Homes England has agreed to provide a grant of £623,000 to carry out infrastructure and remediation works on the site off Meadow Lane in Ainsdale, which was formerly the St John Stone RC Primary School; this closed more than a decade ago due to low pupil numbers.

The council will deliver infrastructure works before handing it over to Sandway, which it established towards the end of last year to develop new housing across the borough. Sandway will carry out around £579,000 of work to the site before housebuilding can begin.

Under the funding agreement, the infrastructure works need to be complete by March 2021.

The number of homes to be delivered on the site is yet to be agreed, but the council said the plans would “make a significant contribution to the local economy” and “add housing choice and affordability”.

Sefton Council is set to sign off the funding at a meeting later this week.
