AHR Manchester director becomes MD

Anthony Langan has been appointed as managing director of architecture at AHR Architects, taking over the reins from Martin Wright who is to resign from the practice next June.

Langan, who joined AHR in 1990 and has played a leading role in developing the studio’s education portfolio, will continue to be based in the Manchester office but will have a national remit in his new role as managing director.

From today, he takes over Wright, who has served with the firm for 38 years and will step into a director role running the Glasglow, Leeds, London and Warsaw offices until he departs on 30 June 2021.

Wright joined AHR in 1982 and over his career led the Leeds office, in particular managing the firm’s work in the food retail sector. He was chair of AHR’s Central European Board and, in this capacity, was responsible for the opening of the Warsaw office in 2005.

Since becoming managing director of the architecture practice in 2014, Wright has overseen corporate strategy, including AHR’s acquisition of residential specialist practic, PCKO in 2016.

Langan’s appointment was the result of a vote by the partners, following Wright’s decision to hand over stewardship of the practice. As managing director, Langan will work to maximise opportunities across the 10 sectors AHR operates in to drive growth, as well as form sustainable strategies and social value initiatives.

Langan said: “I’m looking forward to leading the architectural practice and building on Martin’s hard work and would like to personally thank Martin for all he has given and everything he has achieved at AHR.”

He added: “I am exceptionally proud of the practice and enthusiastic about our future. I do anticipate another challenging 12 months ahead, but also believe we will progress and continue our evolution to ensure we are able to seize the opportunities and exceed our clients’ and our own expectations.”

Wright said: “I have had a full career at AHR, with many great moments. I have been fortunate to work with some amazing people along the way, including clients, consultants, suppliers and colleagues.

“I am very proud of our people and our work and take with me many fantastic memories and friends, and I leave the business in the hands of Anthony, who I wish all the very best.”
