£5m overhaul for uni building

Lancaster University is to spend up to £5m refurbishing the Furness Building used by Furness College and the School of Health and Medicine.

The 50,000 sq ft, four-storey building contains a college bar, porters lodge, offices, meeting rooms and rooftop flats.

The university is seeking a contractor to carry out a 12-month programme of works including new windows, cleaning of existing brickwork, replacement of all services, replacement of roof finishes and the refurbishment of retained walkway canopies. An externally located lift is proposed for a corner of the courtyard.

The proposed construction period is September 2011 until September 2012. The deadline for submitting pre-qualifying questionnaires is 1 March.
