Pets at Homes has opened an 8,000 sq ft store within the New Hall Hey retail park in Rawtenstall, the first of three occupiers to move to the site which has stood empty for seven years.
Alongside Pets at Home, landlord West Register has signed a 12,500 sq ft Marks & Spencer and a 12,500 sq ft TK Maxx. Barnfield Construction is due to start on site later this month and both units are due to complete early in the New Year.
The New Hall Hey development is more than 14 acres and is currently controlled by West Register, a division of the Royal Bank of Scotland. Barnfield Construction recently agreed to acquire 5.5-acres within the scheme and is working with West Register to develop the remainder of the site over the next two years.
New Hall was being developed by Hurstwood Developments until it went into administration in 2010, when construction stalled and secured occupiers Argos and Homebase pulled out.
Future phases for the employment site are expected to include further retail, leisure and industrial space. Barnfield is currently in discussions with a number of potential occupiers.
Dan Symonds, head of development at Barnfield Construction, said: “After years of hard work the team are very pleased to be making a start on the redevelopment of the New Hall Hey site. The line-up of new anchor retailers within phase one is sure to drive further retail occupier interest for the scheme, in addition to encouraging new shoppers to visit Rawtenstall, this can only be a positive step for the town.”
