Network Space primed for Altrincham go-ahead

Approval is recommended for the redevelopment of the former Cartwright trailer manufacturing site into 192,000 sq ft of industrial space.

Working with Aew Architects and planner Spawforths, Network Space lodged plans last year for a project that will see five new buildings created and three existing ones converted, resulting in a modernised complex featuring 26 units ranging from 2,100 sq ft to 28,000 sq ft.

The scheme is billed as Broadheath Network Centre. Tetra Tech and Walker Sime are also on the professional team for the 11.6-acre Atlantic Street development.

In a report prepared for Trafford’s planning committee agenda of its meeting on 9 June, officers said that “the applicant has sought to ensure the amenity of neighbouring residential properties is protected and has amended the site layout following officer concerns.

“The applicant has committed to a number of conditions aimed to mitigate against noise and disturbance to neighbouring residential properties.”

These amendments include a reduction in the total number of units from 26 to 25. In addition, officers point out that the demolition of much of the legacy Cartwrights estate will mean a reduction in the overall volume of buildings on site, from around 221,000 sq ft.

No statutory consultees have raised issues with the proposals, although a number of local residents have objected to both the original plan and the revised layout.

Officers advise that significant weight should be given to the fallback position, in that the site has an existing industrial use, and has been in such use for a considerable time, Cartwright Group having built up a 68-year history before going into administration in 2020.

Elsewhere in the region, Network Space’s collaboration project Glass Futures has now seen the steel frame for the building completed by contractor Bowmer + Kirkland.
