M&Y steps in for Wigan housing following Cruden’s collapse

Regenda subsidiary M&Y Construction has been appointed by the council to redevelop the Brackley House care home site into affordable housing, after the original contractor went into administration.

Cruden Construction was awarded a £2.2m contract in January and started on site. The loss-making business called in administrators in July.

M&Y’s £1.9m replacement contract, won through a re-tender, involves the development of 17 houses in Goose Green, scheduled for completion in November 2021. The architect is Day Architectural.

Gill Kelly, managing director of M&Y, said: “Our head office is local to the site and it is always great when we deliver projects so close to our existing customer base and staff. In recent months, we have helped our clients deliver their new-build projects in these exceptionally challenging circumstances and we are looking forward to working with Wigan Council to do just this; we pride ourselves on approaching every project with the same passion, ambition, and focus.”

Cllr Terry Halliwell, cabinet member for housing and welfare at Wigan Council, said: “Delivering quality, affordable housing for both existing residents and those looking to move to the borough is a key priority for us. The redevelopment of this site brings it back into beneficial use and also helps us to meet housing demand. We’re looking forward to our partnership with M&Y over the coming year as they share our values and understand the importance of this scheme locally.”

The works are due to start on site in January.
