Moto revs up for £75m Preston services

Drivers would be able to enjoy a bite to eat, fuel up, and rest on 34.5 acres off Junction 2 of the M55, should Moto Hospitality’s latest application secure planning permission.

Moto has put in for outline permission to deliver a motorway services area for both eastbound and westbound traffic on the M55. The scheme would have 70 spaces for HGVs to park and 400 bays for cars. This includes 50 dedicated charging bays for electric vehicles.

The number of HGV spaces is particularly important for the area, with Moto noting that its other sites in Lancaster are operating at beyond full capacity for HGVs.

Regarding the amenity building, its designs are still in their infancy, with the proposals enabling the delivery of a facility with a footprint of between 12,900 sq ft and 43,100 sq ft. It would have solar panels and a green roof though, as part of Moto’s sustainability efforts.

Proposals also include measures for rainwater harvesting, waste reduction, and a 10% biodiversity net gain.

Moto estimates that the project has a gross value of £75m and, if built, could create more than 120 jobs.

“Our vision at Moto is to transform the UK’s motorway service experience while supporting the country’s transition to sustainable energy,” said Jess Lockwood, property director for Moto.

“With our plans for Junction 2 of the M55, we are providing state-of-the-art services for every motorist, from EV owners to HGV drivers,” Lockwood continued.

“Our commitment to sustainability, road safety, and job creation means this project will deliver real benefits to the local community, and we’re excited to bring forward these proposals.”

PWA Planning is helping Moto with its application, with Eddisons on transport consultancy duties. Tyler Grange is leading on the environment and Devcomms on community engagement. CG Architects and engineer SDA Services Design Associates round out the project team.

PWA associate Louise Leyland said: “This development is a crucial addition to the M55 corridor as it will fill a significant gap in services for motorists, enhancing safety and convenience along this busy route.

“It’s a project that balances infrastructure needs with sustainability and economic growth, and we’re proud to be working with Moto to bring it to life.”

The planning application was not available on Preston City Council’s planning portal at the time of publishing.

I wish we just had rest areas like they do in France, Italy, or the US. Just somewhere to stretch your legs, have a picnic. Maybe some vending machines. Surely we don’t need more overpriced coffee and fuel so close to Blackpool..

This will be brilliant for Blackpool and make people a little less concerned about finding a charger in the resort 👍

Why?

By Andrew Porter

Should be at least 100 spaces for trucks and they should be free

Pointless spot for a services. People on the M55 are either just setting off for a long journey, or just finishing. Most would use just Preston or Blackpool to stop off or would have stopped off somewhere on the M6.

Perhaps moto should at their existing sites and spend money on them before opening another….
Many are an eyesore…..
