Medlock FRB hands over cycle café
The former Levenshulme South railway is being redeveloped into a cycle café, urban garden and active travel hub, aiming to open in spring 2022.
Station South sits at the centre of the eight-mile Fallowfield Loop urban greenway where the route crosses the A6. The site closed as a railway station in 1958.
Medlock FRB has created a new kitchen area, installed flooring, drainage, toilets and a seating area in a project of around 3,600 sq ft. The scheme has included opening the back of the station to create views of the cycle path going under the building.
The original archway entrance and ceiling have been maintained to preserve the building’s unique character and original features.
Pauline Johnston, one of three directors at community interest company, Station South CIC, said: “We are within touching distance now of realising what’s been the community vision for more than four years.
“This wonderful building, which is of such local historical significance, is being restored to a place that’s inclusive and accessible for everyone to enjoy.
“Station South not only celebrates our area’s rich railway heritage but will provide a safe, vibrant space for people who want to cycle in all its forms as well as the wider community to come together, enjoy life and look after their health and wellbeing.”
The CIC commissioned the start of works on the project in 2018.
Medlock FRB Director Neil Corfield, said: “The refurbishment of Station South is only the start for this building. Once open it will make such a difference and have a huge positive impact on the lives of people in the local community.”
Medlock has also supplied Station South with a donation of children’s balance bikes and helmets for the future ‘learn to ride’ area in the garden space.
The redevelopment project has been supported by more than 1,000 crowdfunders, along with Railway Heritage Trust, Key Fund, Power to Change, Architectural Heritage Fund, Sport England, Transport for Greater Manchester, Manchester City Council, Transpennine Express and Railway Paths.
