McAlpine to develop new Stockport landmark

Alfred McAlpine has been chosen as Stockport Council's preferred developer to construct a new civic building next to Stockport Town Hall.

The project is part of a wider council strategy to reduce its civic accommodation into just three buildings on one site – the Town Hall, Stopford House, and the new 43,055 sq ft building replacing Ponsonby House.

Cllr Paul Carter, executive member for finance, said: "The quality of the submissions was highly impressive, and Alfred McAlpine convinced us of their ability to provide a high quality building to meet the council's requirements. We are all looking forward to developing a close working relationship with them to deliver this key project."

"This will be a fantastic project for the council that will not only revolutionise its own working practices but also see the creation of a landmark green building which will be a legacy for future generations.

"The new building will create significant efficiency benefits and greatly improve service delivery compared to the present situation with staff spread through numerous buildings which are no longer fit for purpose. In disposing of unsuitable properties, the revenue savings and capital receipts will ensure that the construction and operation of the building is cost-free for local taxpayers."

The new building, which subject to planning permission will be operational by December 2010, will include the latest 'green' design features and will be designed and specified according to BREEAM's Excellent standard.

McAlpine was chosen from 18 developers who had expressed interest in the project.
