Manchester to reconsider Crumpsall school plans
After a decision on the application was deferred earlier this month so that a site visit could be conducted, the city council’s planning committee will determine plans to convert Chestnut House Care Home for education use next week.
Located on Crumpsall Lane, the property would be redeveloped into a special educational needs school for up to 120 pupils serving the Jewish community.
The plan is to relocate the primary provision from Belz School in Salford to the site, under plans worked up by charity Binas Yisachar.
Officers have recommended the project for approval despite several objections from locals concerned about the impact of the scheme on the local highway network.
The school would operate six days a week – it would be closed on Saturdays – which has also raised concerns among residents who live nearby.
All three ward councillors – Cllrs Ali, Riasat and Amin – have raised concerns about the development on behalf of residents.

This is not fair on the community. We are overpopulated and over congested as it is in Crumpsall.

Residents understand the importance of education provision, but the concern has always been whether this is the right location for this level of activity.
This area already has significant pressure on its infrastructure, with schools, North Manchester General Hospital and the Metrolink all in close proximity. The concern is the additional impact on local roads, parking and safety, particularly with the narrow residential streets surrounding the site.
The application being deferred for a site visit shows that these concerns required further consideration. We hope the committee carefully considers the effect on existing residents, the proposed six-day operation and whether this location can realistically accommodate the proposed use.
