Manchester gives go-ahead to city centre affordable scheme
McCauls Group’s Laystall Street development will be delivered in partnership with Great Places Housing Group, providing 89 discounted homes.
The development was designed by OMI Architects and will feature 10 apartments available for social rent, 34 for affordable rent and 45 for shared ownership, under plans approved by Manchester City Council yesterday.
The apartments will be contained within a nine-storey new-build block fronting Pigeon Street.
The grade two-listed 32-34 Laystall Street would be restored, converted and extended to provide 8,000 sq ft of workspace.
The building, constructed in 1879, was initially constructed as the offices, showroom and workshops of John Armitage & Son’s terracotta and fireclay manufacturing company.
Deloitte Real Estate advised on planning alongside Stephen Levrant Heritage Architecture.
The scheme is the second in Manchester city centre to offer shared ownership homes. Nearby, H20 Urban’s Store Street scheme comprises 66 shared ownership apartments, being delivered by Clarion Housing Group.
This is the third McCauls project in the city centre, the developer is also working with OMI on the delivery of Warehaus Ancoats, also a blend of renovation and new build.
