L&Q secures consent for Altrincham homes

The housing association’s 88-home project will feature 40% affordable provision.

Trafford Council has given the green light to L&Q’s plans to redevelop the sites of Albert, Chapel, and Lloyd Courts on New Street into 64 one- and two-bedroom apartments within two, four-, and five-storey blocks and 24 three-bedroom houses.

In addition, every house will have a front and rear garden, and every apartment will have a private balcony.

All homes will be accessible and adaptable.

Ben Townsend, new business director for the North West at L&Q, said: “We’re understandably delighted to get planning committee approval, and would like to thank Trafford Council and the local community for their input, which has helped us to shape our plans to ensure they fit with the vision for Altrincham town centre.

“L&Q is committed to building homes in the places where the housing need is greatest, and this development will help to regenerate a brownfield site, providing sustainable, quality new and affordable homes within an attractive place the whole community can enjoy. They will also help to support national efforts to speed up the delivery of 1.5m new, much-needed homes across the country.”

Cllr George Devlin, Trafford Council’s executive member for housing and advice, said: “Trafford Council is totally committed to providing more new and affordable homes to help manage the housing challenges across the borough.

“There is a huge shortage of housing in this area, so we are delighted to get planning approval for 88 new homes. Thank you to our partners at L&Q for all their hard work on this project.”

Avison Young is advising L&Q on planning matters and the project was designed by Project 3.

L&Q lodged plans for the scheme on Altrincham’s New Street last year, scaling back earlier proposals for 104 homes by 16 units following a consultation with the local council and community.

To pave the way for the project, the 60 homes that currently occupy the two-acre site will be demolished.

Residents who used to live in these homes have been rehoused in Gallant House on Regent Road, which completed in 2023.
