Liverpool neonatal unit readies for handover

A 22,000 sq ft refurbishment and extension to the existing Liverpool Women’s Hospital on Crown Street has completed, as the largest unit of its kind in the UK.

Main Contractor Interserve Construction build the neonatal unit on behalf of the Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust. The contract, which Interserve won in 2018, was worth £18m.

Liverpool Women’s Hospital is a recognised national ‘centre of excellence’ for neonatal care, specifically, providing care for babies born prematurely that require specialist treatment.

The project, designed by architect Gilling Dod, involved the construction of clinical areas intended to deliver high standards of observation, privacy, dignity and natural light.

The redevelopment also seeks to address the shortage of parental accommodation and enables the women’s hospital to better comply with service standards.

Phil Shaw, divisional director of Interserve Construction, said: “The specially-designed building sets a precedent for future healthcare developments by uniting the services in one location.

“Every aspect of treatment will happen in one place, saving time and creating a seamless and therapeutic hospital experience improving patient and clinical pathways.”

Jennifer Deeney, head of neonatal nursing and operations at Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust, added: “[Interserve’s] understanding of what we do has been fundamental in allowing us to keep the department fully functional during construction.

“The team learnt to understand our needs and balance those with design and budget, meaning we have an amazing facility that will help us deliver world-class neonatal care into the future.”
