Leverhulme submits app for 240 Green Belt homes

Set on 25 acres east of Rigby Drive in Greasby, the project would also include a community park, walking paths, and cycling routes.

The application is part of Leverhulme’s wider vision for the Wirral, which calls for the building of 1,038 homes on Green Belt.

The 240 homes to be built on the land east of Rigby Drive would range from flats to bungalows to houses, with 72 of the homes to be designated affordable. The dwellings would have between two and four bedrooms.

They would feature bespoke architecture, according to Leverhulme. The developer also said the homes would be energy-efficient with “generous internal floorspace”.

Nigel McGurk, head of land and planning for Leverhulme, said: “There is a requirement in Wirral for a broad mix of new homes to cater for all needs and Leverhulme is best placed to deliver this in a sustainable, responsible way, with a commitment to providing high quality, thoughtfully designed development.

“The Leverhulme Vision has been developed over several years and follows a rigorous process of creating communities which are beautiful but also economically and environmentally resilient, something that has never been more urgent than today.”

As part of that Leverhulme Vision, the proposals include leafy streets with trees and gardens.

A quarter of the project is set to be green and open space. Leverhulme has also said it will expand Greasby copse by planting more woodland.

Earlier this autumn, the developer submitted an application for a 56-acre sustainable alternative natural greenspace that would help offset what Leverhulme described as “recreational pressures” caused by its housebuilding plans.

The Leverhulme Vision project team includes planner Strutt & Parker, masterplanner and architect Alan Baxter, transportation consultant Curtins, and landscaping consultant Barnes Walker.

72 out of 1038 homes are affordable! Not good enough. Plus using up precious greenspace. There are enough four bed 350 – 450k houses about Wirral, surely? What sort of woodland would be planted to replace the loss of the current trees. Probably not broadleaf varieties. 🙁

    Hi Alison. The 72 affordable homes are part of the 240 number that would be built on land east of Rigby Drive. The 1,038 home figure is in regard to the wider Leverhulme vision for the area. I’ve updated the story to clarify this. Best – Julia
