Leigh mill scheme to complete this year
Local business JP McGuire Developments expects to reach completion within 2019 on its £13m conversion of a cotton mill on the bank of the Bridgewater Canal into 98 apartments.
Built in 1882, the grade two-listed six-storey Mathers Mill on Mather Lane had been empty for 20 years, and is being taken forward by JP McGuire, headed by local businessman Jonathan Twentyman, who built up the electrical contractor Genlec in the area.
The development, billed as Loom Wharf, is to include one, two and three-bedroom apartments, along with a large reception area, gym, secure parking and bike storage. The communal areas have been designed by No Chintz. The gated development will also have a private cinema and large dining room available for hire by residents.
Twentyman said: “From when I went to the primary school around the corner to starting my own business in the mill opposite, this building has been the backdrop to my life. Now, I get to give it a new lease of life with this regeneration project.
“Leigh has already benefited recently from the new busway, which means you can get into Manchester city centre in less than half an hour, and with more investment planned for the town, plus private developments like Loom Wharf, it’s an exciting time for the area.”
The reception and communal areas and three show flats are expected to be completed by July, with the rest of the project scheduled to complete by the end of the year. Twenty one apartments have already sold at the scheme, where Help to Buy is available.
Twentyman added: “My aim with Loom Wharf is to make luxury, quality living affordable and accessible to more people. We’re not just ticking boxes and getting away with the minimum standards.
“When you consider rents in the city centre, as well as the space that you get, it’s a really attractive option for those looking to get on the property ladder.
