Latest stage complete for Preston markets revamp
FPE Global and Frank Whittle Partnership have finished the restoration and redecoration of the 1875 grade two-listed market canopy in Preston city centre, on behalf of the council.
The large covered market has reopened this week, after the Victorian structure had its roof and metalwork repaired, fully cleaned and repainted.
The completion of the restoration works paves the way for the construction of new market facilities in the New Year, which received the final go ahead from Preston City Council last week.
Cllr Peter Rankin, leader of Preston City Council, said: “It is great to see this wonderful canopy restored to the highest of standards by local skilled tradesmen, standing proudly next the Fish Market canopy which was restored earlier this year. This is a fantastic achievement and with the recent announcement of our contractors for the next phase we are making significant progress with the Markets Quarter project.”
The restoration and redecoration of the 1875 canopy is the second phase of the Markets Quarter project, following the refurbishment of the Fish Market canopy completed earlier this year.
The £3m next phase will see the construction of new market facilities, the contract for which was recently been awarded to Conlon Construction.
Conlon will be on site from late January with completion anticipated towards the end of 2017.
Later phases include a new 11-screen cinema, restaurants and car park, to be delivered by Muse Developments.
