Lancaster appoints team to capitalise on Eden Project Morecambe

Tetra Tech will lead a three-strong team of consultants in mapping out a regeneration and investment strategy that will put the town on a stable footing to reap the rewards of its largest ever project.

Lancaster has appointed Tetra Tech with 31Ten and WSP to devise a way forward for Morecambe beyond the Eden Project.

The planning application for the £125m scheme, which would turn an 11-acre seafront site into a family-friendly, eco-destination that showcases the relationships between animals, humans, plants and the environment, was approved in 2022.

It is anticipated that Eden Project International’s development could attract 760,000 additional visitors to Morecambe annually and act as a catalyst for the town’s wider regeneration.

Jonathan Noad, chief officer for sustainable growth at Lancaster City Council, said: “With Eden Project Morecambe now firmly in the delivery phase, the town needs a clear and coordinated plan that aligns local ambitions, attracts further investment, and secures long-term benefits for the area.

“To make the most of the opportunities presented by Eden, Lancaster City Council, in partnership with Lancashire County Council, has appointed a multi-disciplinary consortium to help shape the future of Central Morecambe through the development of a Regeneration and Investment Framework.”

Noad added: “The strategy will support a strengthened commercial, cultural and leisure offer that complements Eden Project Morecambe, and also focus on how existing local businesses can benefit from the increased activity and visibility that Eden will bring.

“Our shared goal is to ensure regeneration delivers inclusive, sustainable prosperity across Morecambe and its wider communities so the town can realise its full potential.”

I wonder if reform will be cooperative on a project that they have inherited?

If the Eden Project ever gets going!!

Here’s a secret for you, it’s never going to be built.

So it’s £125 million again. Make your mind up, it started at £50 then it became £125 and when the government promised £50 million it had miraculously gone down to £100 million! How will it be profitable when Eden showed a loss of £1.5 million last year?

By Susan

Hope it goes ahead

By D j Cronshaw

How the hell are you going to manage traffic and parking??????there is no room now! To park?and it certainly isn’t the people who live in the flats as they have nowhere to park either!!!

By Pam

Now would be an ideal time to bring back something to replace frontier land based on the anticipated numbers of visitors?

By Angus Raine

We’re is the extra Twenty five Million coming from.? How much more is it going to go up before a spade in the ground ? 760.000 visitors your having a laugh .

Eden project yes great but no mention of us residents on mainway who are having to live in damp mouldy unsafe buildings waiting for year’s on the promises of brand new housing only to be told the investors pulled out due to waiting on planning permission which to be fare would be the st thing getting permission before asking for money I used to work for the council and considering the permission was to be granted by the lancashire county Council and with it being new safe housing should have been priority. Not only that the council are moaning about lack of funding yet over half of the flats on mainway have been empty for over 2 years so how much revenue enue have they lost they could have temporarily housed the homeless and charged a minimum rent instead of nothing absolute joke

All this is wonderful news I just hope that the local people and businesses aren’t forgotten about during this process and multinational companies don’t come in an hoover up all the benefits and prevent the wider community benefits that we all hope the eden project brings.

Is starting a passenger service from Windermere direct to Morecambe via Carnforth being considered?

In our dreams!!

This council can’t even look after the local football Pitches so I’m afraid I’m very sceptical about how this is ever going to be built !!!

By Paul Williams

If as you say “we are firmly in the delivery stage” which has been said for about 8 months now , what has actually been delivered. Has the new general manager moved into his office in the Winter Gardens, has the building contractors been appointed. Why has the site not been fenced off with banners being draped all around stating when the work will commence.

What About the old fairground site 25 years and still nothing done

A waste of money

Hope you don’t think people up north can afford £42 to get in ? Because you’re wrong

By Anonymous

It’s time the scheme was started as locals are so used to promises that never happen.
I hope as part of the regeneration the business’s on the promenade no infact all the business’s in Morecambe are told to make their buildings more attractive.
Get the council to do something with the eyesore around the Westend on Regent Road,Yorkshire Street and Albert Road as they make Morecambe look to outsiders as though no body is bothered.

Who is going to be able to afford to go to the Eden Project once it’s built?
The money should be better used and improve Morecambes seafront, shops and hotels.

By Vicky

It would be great for the area, boosting business. More than that is the ecological study and impact of education of children and adults alike on how important it is to work alongside nature rather than damaging it. Good luck

Great news for the town. Morecambe certainly has the most incredible views for such an exciting project.

As for one of the questions below – ‘where will the money come from?’ Largely it’s always private investment with these projects. The cost was always going to be around £100 million. £50m from government and £50m from private investment.

Very much looking forward to seeing the start of this.

By Lowen Jones

The rest of the money will come from private funding. It’s going to happen. Too many people with a vested interest in keeping Morecambe as a drinking and partying town, or pushing their own agendas. A park and ride scheme will be put in place to electric bus people in and out.

Well it’s been in the pipeline now for a number of years.
I am living in Morecambe and just wonder , what is the target start date ?
Then Morecambe will have massive issues with accommodation and transport links.
I won’t hold my breath.

If you get rid of the campervans there would be plenty of room to park i have also notice caravans now

The usual positivity in the comments I see 🙂

If it does get scrapped, I wonder what will happen to the plethora of new businesses called “Eden *insert industry*”
