Krol Corlett hands over Wirral Met’s Maths and English Centre

Delivering an additional 7,000 sq ft of instruction space to the college’s Birkenhead campus, the completion of the teaching block’s expansion is part of a £4m package of works.

Main contractor Krol Corlett is still on site delivering the NEXUS Engineering Hub on Wirral Met’s Twelve Quays campus. That building is due to complete in October.

The Maths and English Centre’s extension was designed by 10 Architect and features eight classrooms and staff offices.

It was a personal project for Krol Corlett managing director Dan Tebay, who studied joinery at Wirral Met. He ensured that students were involved in the building’s construction.

“Aside from delivering on time and to budget, one of the most pleasing aspects of this job is how many of the college’s construction students we’ve been able to involve in the project,” he said.

“The classroom is vital, but there’s nothing like being on site experiencing how a complex project is delivered, the discipline needed to ensure everything goes smoothly, and the camaraderie with all the different trades.  Hats off to all the students involved so far – they’ve done a cracking job and been a great help.”

Gill Banks, principal and chief executive of Wirral Met, was pleased the building was ready for the September intake.

“Students will benefit from a dedicated, modern environment designed to help them develop the essential Maths and English skills that underpin success in education, employment and life,” Banks said.

In addition to 10 Architect and Krol Corlett, the project team for the Maths and English Centre included structural engineer MDA Wirral, building services specialist Futureserv, and cost consultant SDA Consulting.
