Knowledge Quarter key to Liverpool’s future
Liverpool Vision, the urban regeneration company, has called for an improved planning framework to encourage growth in the city's university district.
A new report commissioned by Liverpool Vision, entitled Prospectus for Liverpool's Knowledge Quarter, makes a series of recommendations for the area.
The Prospectus argues the case for:
- Promoting the Knowledge Quarter nationally and internationally
- Ensuring opportunities for business incubation and knowledge transfer between the universities and the business community are maintained
- Building on the relationships between the Knowledge Quarter and the Hope Street Quarter to promote the high quality cultural and leisure opportunities on offer
- Encouraging concerted investment in under performing areas: Brownlow Hill, Mount
- Pleasant, Hardman Street/Myrtle Street and London Road
- Improving existing routes within and between the Knowledge and Hope Street Quarters
The authors of the report, Regeneris Consulting, found that the area centred around the core university facilities of the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University in the east of the city centre, together with Liverpool John Moores University's city campus to the north, generates £1bn for the local economy each year.
Around 14,000 workers, many of whom are highly skilled, are employed full-time in the area, which equals around 7% of the city's total workforce.
In addition to the universities, the Knowledge Quarter includes institutions of international significance such as the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and is further enhanced by Liverpool Hope University, Liverpool Community College and Liverpool Institute of performing Arts (LIPA).
