Kellen’s 211-home Bury scheme tipped to progress
A 22-acre site off York Street is to be redeveloped under proposals from the company that was set up by Renaker managing director Daren Whitaker in 2020.
Kellen Homes submitted a planning application to Bury Council for 211 two-, three- and four-bedroom properties on the southern part of the site in May.
Ahead of Bury’s planning committee meeting next week, officers have recommended the scheme should be approved.
The northern section would be transformed into an eight-acre wetland and public space.
The two halves of the site are separated by industrial warehousing currently occupied by Next, Safeway and DHL.
Kellen’s Bury scheme will generate £9.4m of GVA, according to a planning statement prepared by WSP.
Drawn up in partnership with Seaham Estates and Cantt Pak, Kellen’s proposals supersede an earlier application to redevelop the site from Countryside Properties.
Countryside won permission in 2018 for 153 homes and 80,000 sq ft of employment space at the York Street site.
Another of Kellen’s pipeline schemes, the redevelopment of the former British Vita site on Seaford Road in Salford, also followed proposals from Countryside.
Kellen’s chief executive Ian Kelley headed up Countryside Properties for more than 20 years.
For a time, Kellen’s York Street scheme was the largest in the developer’s pipeline. However, in August, the housebuilder lodged an application for 272 homes on the 13-acre Olympic Freight depot on Bennett Street in West Gorton.
