JOB TITLE STRATEGIC TRANSPORT LEAD
SALARY Grade SM2 (£51,775 to £54,675)
This is an exciting but challenging opportunity for an experienced, well-organised and motivated individual to lead on strategic transport matters within Bury.
Bury is a great place to live and work. It has a population of around 187,500 and has excellent access to wide areas of countryside and to other regions via its roads, the Metrolink and bus services. Bury is home to some vibrant urban areas, including Bury town centre which, behind Manchester city centre and the Trafford Centre, is the third highest ranking retail centre within Greater Manchester.
This opportunity comes at an exciting time to be involved in strategic transport issues in Bury with the Council having responsibility for in excess of 650km of highway network and having ambitious aspirations for growth and regeneration across the Borough that will require significant investment in new and upgraded transport infrastructure.
This includes major regeneration and redevelopment programmes of our key town centres in Bury, Radcliffe, Prestwich and Ramsbottom. Public transport and active travel interventions will be critical to the success of these plans, including a new interchange for Bury Town Centre.
The successful candidate will also play an integral role in helping to bring forward one of the largest employment sites in the country (Northern Gateway), ensuring that our residents are able to access the thousands of new jobs.
The Greater Manchester Transport Strategy 2040 sets out a strong commitment to provide a transport system that supports sustainable economic growth and the efficient and effective movement of people and goods; improves the quality of life for all by being integrated, affordable and reliable; protects our environment, improves air quality and supports our target to be net zero carbon by 2038; and capitalises on new technology and innovation.
Principally, you will shape the Borough’s own Local Transport Strategy sitting below this, ensuring that the authority is in a position to deliver sustainable growth.
You will represent the Council’s interests within the Greater Manchester sub-region, with your in-depth understanding and significant experience of transport policy and the versatility to apply these skills to development planning. You will need to demonstrate an ability to manage staff and have a range of advanced technical skills covering aspects such as transport policy and strategy, feasibility studies, options appraisals and developing business cases for schemes.
Bury Council is a flexible employer interested in making the most of your skills, and we will also invest in you through our internal development programmes and training. If you are interested in this opportunity and want to be part of a strong and successful team, then we look forward to hearing from you.
