In St Helens we are proud of our borough, linking both industry and innovation to a strong local heritage sitting in an area of rolling countryside and areas of outstanding natural beauty. Perfectly positioned, we are ideally placed to play a big part in our regional debate too at the heart of the Northern Powerhouse, with easy access to Liverpool, Merseyside, Lancashire and Greater Manchester and excellent Motorway and transport links being just 2 minutes away from the M6 and M62.
There is no better time to join us and become part of our improvement journey and help build our legacy. Now more than ever, we need to drive innovative change across our services, enabling the Council to take the next step in delivering its ambitious agenda with a focus on securing shared prosperity outcomes, environmental enhancements and tackling the boroughs existing inequalities.
We are dealing with an exciting range of planning challenges, balancing needs for major new development linked to the Council’s growth agenda against the protection of the borough’s greenspaces and other environmental assets. We are at an advanced stage in the preparation of our new local plan, with the local plan scheduled for adoption later this year.
You will work in the Planning Policy Team and will provide advice and guidance on neighbourhood planning, both within the council and to members of the public. The immediate focus will be to raise the profile of neighbourhood planning and the opportunities it presents, within our communities.
The post would be suitable for someone in the earlier stages of their planning career, or with more experience. You must have a degree in planning or a related discipline and a good knowledge of relevant legislation, guidance and procedures. You must also be able to communicate well both orally and in writing, analyse information in a clear and logical manner and meet priorities and deadlines. You should also be able to work well as a team member and individually with minimum supervision, be enthusiastic and able to supervise others, and have good IT skills. Experience of neighbourhood planning and/or working with community organisations is desirable but not essential.
Council employees are required to abide by the ethical standards embodied by the 7 NOLAN principles of conduct in public life. These include selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership.
We welcome applications from the BAME community.
