JD plots expansion of Bury headquarters

The fashion company, one of the borough’s largest employers, is planning a new 76,000 sq ft head office as part of a mission to improve facilities at its Pilsworth Road complex.

JD Group has lodged a hybrid planning application with Bury Council to create the building, which would feature office space, a gym and a restaurant.

A creche, aimed at meeting the childcare needs of JD employees, and outdoor sports facilities including an all-weather pitch also feature within the proposals.

The project would be built next to JD’s existing headquarters on the former A-Plant site. JD acquired the plot in 2017 and A-Plant ceased trading in 2018.

The following year, JD began drawing up plans to redevelop the site but this process was delayed by the pandemic. An earlier iteration of the proposals featured a mix of office and training facilities, an auditorium, mock shop and staff gym, as well as a three-storey car park.

However, the scheme has since been adapted in response to changing ways of work and employee needs.

Aew Architects and Space Invader are leading on design and Maze Planning is the planning consultant for the scheme. Walker Sime is the QS and Avid is the employers agent. Urban Green is the consultant for biodiversity net gain, ecology and arboriculture.

As well as the new-build project, JD is also in the process of refurbishing office space within three existing buildings at the site.

The application’s reference number with Bury Council is 68530.

It’d be really helpful in these reports if you could include a link to the planning application, the reference in this case being 68530 on Bury Council’s planning website.

Hi Tom! We have been endeavouring to make it a policy to include reference numbers, but sometimes we forget! Thanks for your comment. I’ve updated the story with the reference number as well. – Julia
