Investors boost amenities in former Elliot scheme

The £100m Aura student resi scheme would get a private sky lounge, “festival zone” and rooftop terrace if plans are approved at Liverpool City Council’s planning committee meeting on Tuesday.

Construction for Aura has begun at Erskine Street in Islington, as the development already had planning permission for 999 bedrooms. The new application, designed by Falconer Chester Hall Architects, seeks to tweak the original plans to increase the amenity offering. That includes adding the private sky lounge and rooftop terrace on the scheme’s 15th floor. The “festival zone” is a café area on the ground floor that will be open to both the public and residents.

Making those changes means losing eight of the originally proposed 999 bedrooms, bringing the number of bedrooms on offer to 991.

“The works will have a minimal impact on the building’s exterior, but will add significantly to what is already going to be a great place to live and study,” said Steven Nicholson, the project architect from Falconer Chester Hall.

Aura is currently owned by a consortium made up of the project’s original investors after developer Elliot Group went into administration in March 2020.

The investors also plan to make a Section 106 contribution of more than £1m.

Aura’s latest proposals are recommended for approval by the planning committee officer. If given the go-ahead, Vermont Construction will commence work immediately.

Phase one of the project is slated to complete in September this year. It incorporates three blocks. The rest of the scheme aims to finish in September 2022.
