Interserve wins £35m Knowledge Quarter cancer centre
Interserve has been named as main contractor on Liverpool’s Rutherford Cancer Centre, beating rival bidders Graham and Morgan Sindall.
The contractor has won an £11.5m construction contract to deliver the centre, which will deliver a full suite of cancer treatment options.
Work is now due to start on the project in January next year, and it is hoped conventional cancer treatment will be available from 2018, while beam therapy will be available from 2019.
It is expected the centre will be able to treat up to 500 patients a year and treatment will be available to medically-insured private patients, self-paying patients and patients referred by the NHS.
Plans were granted for the project in July this year, and the professional team includes Fairhurst as architect.
Place North West first revealed the three-contractor shortlist for the project in November this year.
It is the latest cancer centre and health facility that Interserve has won across the UK.
The contractor is on site at Manchester’s first proton beam therapy centre for The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, with the project set to complete next year, and is also building another scheme for Proton Partners in Northumberland.
Proton Partners is also building a genomics research centre at the Life Sciences Accelerator building in Liverpool which will be the first part of a health campus set to surround the new £335m Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
Phil Shaw, Interserve’s construction director for the North West, said: “The team’s knowledge, experience, innovation and expertise contributed to winning this contract. We are delighted to be embarking on a journey with Proton Partners International to jointly deliver a successful project”.
Mike Moran, chief executive officer of Proton Partners International, said: “We are really pleased to announce that we have appointed Interserve, one of the world’s foremost support services and construction companies, as our partners.
“We are confident that their team will provide the very best quality and expertise in building our Rutherford Cancer Centre in Liverpool”.
