Henry Brothers starts on £12m University of Manchester revamp
The Northern Ireland-based firm will refurbish two floors of the university’s Chemistry Building to create flexible lab space, purpose-built write-up spaces, break-out areas and offices.
Most of the work is focused on floors four and five of the building, which is located on the corner of Upper Brook Street and Dover Street. Also included in the scheme, though, is improvements to the roof and eighth-floor plantroom. External ventilation ducts will also be built to feed into floors four and five to connect with the existing fans there.
Henry Brothers began work on site this month and aims to complete the project in April 2023.
University of Manchester director of estates Diana Hampson said that the school was pleased to be working with Henry Brothers on the scheme.
“This continues our campus investment to create an inspiring and progressive environment designed for the 21st century and recognises contemporary demands for flexible space,” Hampson said. “I look forward to seeing how the work progresses.”
The Chemistry Building was built in the 1960s and is seven storeys tall. Halliday Meecham Architects, structural engineer Curtins and M&E engineer EDPI designed the refurbishment.
Gardiner & Theobald is the NEC project manager for the Chemistry Building revamp. RLB is the quantity surveyor. William Bailey and Electract are helping Henry Brothers with M&E services.
