Hanson plots £20m Padeswood facility expansion
Hanson Cement has submitted plans to Flintshire Council for a £20m upgrade of its Padeswood cement works in Mold, building a new vertical mill and adding 32,000 sq ft of additional floorspace.
According to Hanson, the “purpose of the development is to replace old and inefficient milling facilities which grind the clinker into cement with a more modern and efficient cement mill – in the form of a new vertical roller mill.”
Due to a recent growth in the cement market, the works are currently at full capacity, and additional development would allow it to vary production and process clinker rather than transport it by road to a facility in Stamford.
The scheme would see the demolition of the existing cement storage and loading facilities, and the construction of a new vertical roller mill, rail loading facility, and an extension to the existing railway line.
The new loading facility will allow 4,000 to 5,000 tonnes of cement to be transported by rail from the site each week.
The works would be operational by the end of 2019, with capacity to process 650,000 tonnes of clinker, a “significant upgrade” according to the planning application.
