Hallé extension proposed

A planning application has been submitted by architect Stephenson Studio on behalf of the Hallé orchestra for a modern extension to the Hallé St Peter’s rehearsal space in Ancoats, Manchester.

The conversion of the former church completed in 2013 and, subject to planning approval, there will be a second phase of work to increase the range of events that can place at the site, both for the Hallé Concerts Society and the local community.

The Hallé has entered into an agreement for a 999-year lease of the land required for the extension with owner, the Homes & Communities Agency, from whom the church is also rented, both at peppercorn rents.

The Hallé also stores equipment and holds choir practice at nearby St Michael’s Church in George Leigh Street. The extension will enable all activities to be located at a single site, Hallé St Peter’s.

Hallé St Peter’s has been granted a wedding licence and has already hosted a number of weddings. The venue is hired to other musical ensembles as well as companies for client entertaining and trade shows.

Stephenson Studio, Max Fordham, Arup, IDACS and Booth King advised Hallé Concerts Society.
