Ground prepared for Leighton Hospital replacement
A programme of infrastructure works will start as Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust puts into place a plan to build a new Leighton Hospital in Crewe.
The Trust aims to build the new hospital on land located to the north of the existing Leighton Hospital. The site was acquired in March 2024.
As a RAAC-affected facility, Leighton was included in wave one of the rejigged New Hospitals Programme released by the government in January.
Like North Manchester General, this means that Leighton is inked in for a start on site in 2027 or 2028, each hospital budgeted at £1bn to £1.5bn.
Warning local residents and hospital users of road disruption, the Trust said that in order to bring electrical power to the site of the new hospital, cabling will be installed along several roads in the area, including Middlewich Road, Brian Palin Way, Tottys Hall Way, and Flowers Lane.
Additionally, the Vistry Group will build a roundabout on Flowers Lane as part of its housing development to the east of Leighton Hospital.
Jim O’Brien, MEP lead for the Trust’s Healthier Futures team, which is delivering the new hospital programme, said: “Building a new hospital is a major project, which is why we must undertake some critical engineering works well in advance of the actual hospital construction work.
“During this period, it is likely that traffic management measures will be in place, which will impact travel around the area, and to and from Leighton Hospital.
“We are currently liaising with our partners to plan the work and will share full details with the public once everything has been confirmed.”
The Trust plans to develop a full ‘health and care neighbourhood’ which will include the new Leighton Hospital. An outline planning application for the new hospital will be submitted to Cheshire East Council in the summer.
