Greedy Pig homes to complete in 2022

A scheme to build 46 affordable homes on the derelict site of the former pub in Winsford is due to start on site this month, according to developer Weaver Vale Housing Trust and contractor Lane End Group.

The development between New Road and the Weaver Navigation is close to the River Weaver and comprises six two-bedroom and four three-bedroom homes, as well as 20 two-bedroom and 16 one-bedroom apartments, all for affordable rent.

The apartments will have designated space for parking, and the scheme will feature green space for residents.

The site was the location of the former Greedy Pig public house and café but has been derelict for seven years.

Warrington-based contractor-developer Lane End, which specialises in building housing for registered affordable housing providers, had submitted plans last August for 46 affordable homes on the site, together with a KFC drive-through and branch of Starbucks.

Later in the year, in November, it lodged a second application proposing to build up to 78 homes on the site. The outline application proposed to build the initial 46 homes, with potential for an additional 32 homes instead of the KFC and Starbucks. The council approved this application.

Weaver Vale and Lane End said this week they will now work with local communities on proposals to create new jobs on the site. The scheme has been part-funded through a grant from Homes England, the trust added.

The affordable rent homes will be built by Lane End on behalf of the trust.

Wayne Gales, chief executive of Weaver Vale Housing Trust, said: “This development will bring much needed new affordable homes to Winsford, and play an important part in improving access to high quality, affordable homes for local people.”

Lane End Group’s managing director Richard Harrison added: “We’ve been working on this project for some time and now we will see 46 new homes for people of all ages in Winsford.

“We are already engaged with the local community in the town through our work at Rilshaw Lane, where we are building 215 units [on behalf of Laurus Homes] and we expect that to continue in the future when we mobilise our site.”

Work on the site is due to start this month and complete in March 2022.
