GONW approves Workington Tesco plans

Work on the site of a new Tesco store in Workington, Cumbria, is soon to begin after the Government Office North West ruled there was no need for a public inquiry.

Some local residents had campaigned against the plans when it transpired that Allerdale council wanted to use some of the £18m Tesco will pay for the site to create a leisure and sports complex on the banks of the River Derwent, including a single shared stadium for Workington Reds football club and Workington Town rugby league side. Reds fans had argued that the club should stay at its Borough Park home.

Now that plans have been approved, the Extra store, which will replace the supermarket on New Bridge Road, and will include a petrol station, café, bus stop and 700 parking spaces, will open within nine months.
