Go ahead for Viride/Eldonians eco-homes

Liverpool City Council has approved plans for an £85m eco-homes development to expand the Eldonian village in the north of the city.

The Via Verde scheme proposed by a joint venture between the Eldonian community trust and Jersey-based developer Viride includes 350 homes, 90,000 sq ft of commercial space, a crèche and various 'green' facilities such as a bat haven and large bike shed for 400 cycles. Buildings will use the latest carbon reductive technology including biomass boilers to keep energy consumption to a minimum.

Blocks of up to nine storeys will front Leeds Street and Vauxhall Road, creating a new high street with a convenience store, smaller shops, restaurants and bars.

The decision will now be referred to the Department of Communities and Local Government to assess whether it should be called in for public inquiry due to its size.

Work is scheduled to start in 2009 with the entire development completed in 2011.
