Go-ahead for Anwyl’s Runcorn care scheme
Approval has been granted for a wholly affordable 66-apartment independent living development on a site off High Street.
Halton Council’s development management committee approved the proposals by Anwyl Partnerships on 7 November.
The professional team includes Baldwin Design Consultancy, Hydrock, Pegasus Group, transport adviser Ashley Helme Associates, FPCR, Brownfield Solutions and Wardell Armstrong.
The plans comprise 32 one-bedroom apartments and 34 two-bedroom apartments. Demolition of an existing building is required, while the rest of the site comprises soft landscaping and some hardstanding.
Close to Doctor’s Bridge just outside the Old Town boundary, the Chambers pub lies to the east of the site and the Bridgewater Canal to the south.
Earlier in the process, Peel’s Bridgewater Canal Company had registered a holding objection until it had been established that Anwyl will meet any costs relating to impact on the canal towpath as a public right of way during construction. This has now been agreed.
Planning officers had recommended approval, noting that the proposals would “have a positive impact on the area and the waterfront locations along the Bridgewater Canal”.
Halton Council has this month secured government sign-off for four of the seven projects that make up its £23.6m Town Deal allocation, representing £14m of its overall pot.

The illustrative picture of the scheme is misleading – the steps from Doctor’s bridge are not part of the scheme and are not to standard; essentially unusable especially by those with mobility issues, and those without would probably not wish to use them (ASB, steep and narrow). Therefore the scheme is totally disconnected from the towpath and canal that this picture is using as the principal selling point. The shaded area behind the stairs, a dungeon or well-like area; shaded, dark and confined is the “garden” area for the elderly residents. Overdevelopment … but no doubt viability was the plea, as it always is, notably form the mass house builders – the most profitable sector of construction.
