Go ahead for £6.6m Burnley College expansion

The UCBC building is set for a three-storey expansion of its existing facilities after the college secured funding for the project.

Providing 12,900 additional sq ft of internal floorspace to the existing building, the £6.6m upgrade will accommodate additional study and teaching spaces at Burnley College.

Informal breakout spaces, a café, and a robotics room are also included in the plans.

The current building was specifically designed to accommodate such an extension, with its foundations suitable to add multiple additional floors.

The development site is located on Princess Way at the centre of Burnley College campus. The college sits in the Stoneyholme district to the north of Burnley town centre.

Drawn up by ABW Architects, the designs consider the college’s industrial heritage. Situated to the west of the River Calder, the site was formerly occupied by industrial facilities such as gasworks and a paper mill.

The project team is as follows:

  • Services Engineer – Rosiben
  • Structural Engineer – Waterman Structures
  • Transport Consultant – Waterman
  • Acoustic Consultant – Azymuth
  • Cost Consultant – Identity Consult
  • BREEAM Assessor – Ridge and Partners

A contractor has not yet been appointed for the project. Burnley Council anticipates going to tender in March.

Construction on the four-storey building is scheduled to begin in July 2023, with completion scheduled for May 2024.

The application’s reference number with Burnley Council is FUL/2022/0636.
