Glyndwr University bags £9m for double sale 

Edwards Homes and Bellway Homes have bought a combined 19 acres across two sites in Wrexham, paving the way for the creation of 200 properties. 

Bellway has acquired a 12-acre plot on Gatewen Road in the village of New Broughton for £6m. 

The site has outline planning permission for 112 homes, 25% of which would be affordable. 

Elsewhere, Glyndwr University sold a seven-acre plot located next to the main university campus to Edwards Homes for just over £3m. 

The site had outline planning permission for up to 410 apartments, however, Edwards Homes has since won approval for a rejigged scheme comprising 90 houses.

Ben Lamont, associate director at Legat Owen, which advised the university on both sales, said: “While the outline planning consent was for apartments, it was clear that the site lent itself to traditional housing.  

“The university, Wrexham Council and Edwards Homes have successfully collaborated to provide a mix of family and starter homes in this highly sustainable edge of town-centre location.” 

Edwards Homes and Bellway were unrepresented on the deals.

Lynda Powell, executive director of operations at Wrexham Glyndwr University, said: “The sale of these land assets, which were surplus to our requirements, provides us with significant capital receipts that will be reinvested into our university campuses across North East Wales as part of our campus strategy.” 

The £60m strategy aims to improve learning conditions for students across the university’s estate. 

Part of the plan involves creating a gateway building at the heart of the Plas Coch campus which will become the main entrance to the university and also house the new Student Union.
