Glenbrook awaits consent for £70m Wigan industrial
Meridian 6 is a 625,000 sq ft logistics development proposed for a 40-acre site south of Lancashire Industrial Estate in Ashton-in-Makerfield.
Glenbrook’s £70m industrial development is tipped for approval by Wigan Council’s planning committee when it meets next week.
The 40-acre site off Bolton Road has been allocated for employment use in Wigan Council’s unitary development plan since 2006.
The proposal could be delivered in several different configurations, for example as a small number of large units or as several small and medium-sized buildings.
“The configuration and phasing of development will be driven by market demand and will be subject to the submission of further planning applications,” according to a report to Wigan’s planning committee.
Glenbrook predicts Meridian 6 could create up to 1,200 jobs.
The scheme is designed by Aew Architects, and Gerald Eve is the planning consultant. SGi Consulting Engineers is the civil and structural engineer for the project.
How about the 400 objections from the local population who know that the promises of 1200 jobs is fantasy. Didn’t happen when existing industrial estate was opened and hasn’t since. Wigan Council pretends it has green credentials but it is quite happy to see an area of natural beauty and green belt destroyed, not even considering the additional traffic this development will create on already gridlocked roads.

Why had more traffic to an already congested road and town and take away all the Green open fields , Wigan council are a disgrace, there is enough warehouses in Ashton .

Absolutely disgraceful project.
One which will add more traffic to surrounding areas and completely destroy one of the few green spaces in the area, a space enjoyed by many.
Common sense needs to prevail, this project is an abomination.

Absolutely wrong decision building here. There is so many empty buildings at the moment in wigan that can’t be filled. Wild life gonna be lost. And having a entrance on a corner where it floods and its a bad corner anyway.. thanks for not having any thoughts about people who live here Shame on you

Hello
Could we asked who informed you that it’s “tipped for approval”. The local residents, myself included are opposing this for many reasons including the increased traffic, loss of greenland and impact on wildlife!!

This development needs to be stopped. Ashton cannot cope with the amount of traffic already and this greenbelt land is full of wildlife , the air quality is already very poor in this area . I strongly object , greenbelt land should NOT be being built on

100s of people who live local to this site have sent in objections to this development. Ashton in Makerfield is a small town with roads not suitable for another big development
By Carol Riley
This project is not wanted in this area. Destroying green land and habitat, adding to already overcongested roads, providing low skill, low pay jobs.
By Andrew Foster
This development is unwanted and unneeded. There are already numerous vacant warehouses in the immediate area and a dangerous amount of traffic on badly maintained local roads. 400 objections submitted by locals. Surely that has to give the planning officer/committee food for thought?

Your proposal is not approved yet and has attracted the highest number of objections in many many years. Your proposals would have a massive impact on wildlife including local deer and negatively impact the health and wellbeing of local children…not least the housing estate opposite and nursery/primary schools nearby. Your development would be in a green air zone and cause traffic chaos. Your development is ill thought out and arrogant with no thought for the health and wellbeing of the local community. You are not wanted here in Ashton in Makerfield. There are already plenty of empty warehouse opportunities in the surrounding area.

This is just wrong so much wildlife will be destroyed and the air pollution will be horrendous Bolton Road is a nightmare as it is now without all the extra traffic this will bring
By David Jones
What a shame the local residents of Ashton in Makerfield’s objections mean nothing! Exasperating traffic problems and spoiling our dwindling green space with another set of industrial units when the trading estate next door has empty blocks. I hope the council sees sense!
By Jayne Smith
I am totally against this we need the green lands not only for wildlife, to stop CAZ. Can someone explain if the pollution is so bad that Wigan and Gt. Manchester councils think its healthy to add more to our roads?
By Nicola Wilkinson
I live on Bolton road it dosnt need anymore traffic the road is clogged as it is with hgvs and cars I hope for the sake of people’s health it dosnt get the go ahead there a plenty empty industrial units in the area as it is without building more
By James wood
This proposal should be refused at the planning hearing as the local road infrastructure is already deemed to be beyond capacity despite the figures being used from 2017 and 2020 in the pandemic lockdown. Shame on the council if this gains approval.

We badly need employment in Wigan, it’s been allocated for an eternity, get it built!!! Never mind the NIMBYism.
By Mike
No jobs needed here!
By Zoe
Once again we property and regeneration professionals are asking for Place North West to set up a requirement for account creation to allow commenting. Comments above are prime example of why we are championing for this.
By NIMBY
Ashamed by the negative comments. Outrageous hypocrisy. We need jobs!!
By Wiganer
Ashton in Makerfield cannot cope with the existing heavy goods traffic on it’s roads. It’s crazy to add more, whilst taking our much needed green belt.
There is much talk of climate change at the moment and damage to our planet. Is now the time to cut down trees and take our green belt? We have already lost so much to housing and warehouse developments – where will this end? We are human beings. We need to breathe.
By Joan McCann
How can they justify this? There are vacant warehouses in the current estate. Can they show rental agreements for the next 5 or 10 years? Waste of good green land, waste of resources, added pollution, added traffic chaos, more pot holes and damaged roads. HGVs to should not be allowed through the town centre, all this does is encourage it. No thank you!

It’s quite evident that Wigan Council has complete disregard for any environmental matters, nor cares for its local residents. Any jobs from this scheme would be few and far between for local people and only be given to people already with existing companies who plan to move to the site. No matter how many objections it will get, Wigan Council will already green-light this scheme – sadly the councillors in Wigan do not care about about objections, they only care about how much money is coming into the council through tax and rates. It’s funny how the council in the recent past used to promote how green it was by using professional botanists like Prof.David Bellamy on its front page of Borough Life and in articles in the Leigh Journal. I’m sure if he was still alive to see what the council have done in the last few years, he would be outraged. The plans and scheme should be scrapped.

I am totally against this as the infrastructure can not cope with any more traffic in this already very busy area
By David Finch
The need for this type of employment has not been demonstrated. Wigan Council aspires to create higher paid, better skilled jobs… not low paid warehousing. As for traffic, as the Officers report points out …most of Ashtons junctions are significantly over capacity. Tis time to be sensible.
