Funding secured for next phase of £11m Anglesey link road

Jones Bros and SCP have been chosen to deliver the third phase of the Llangefni link road in Anglesey in a deal worth £3m after the scheme was given additional funding from the Welsh Government.

Jones Bros will act as main contractor and SCP will be principal designer for the scheme, which will link the Grwp Llandrillo Menai Pencraig campus with the A5114.

The final phase of the road includes around 500m of new carriageway and an additional roundabout, as well as the reconstruction of existing structures, and will complete in 2018.

The county council has now signed a partnership charter to allow works to go ahead, and around £3.5m of Government funding has been provided for the scheme, subject to an updated business case.

The road is intended to ease traffic congestion through Llangefni town centre and will provide improved links to the area around the campus, which has been designated Enterprise Zone status.

The first two phases of the road were built by contractor Alun Griffiths. The second phase completed earlier this year, and the entire scheme is expected to cost around £11m.

The Welsh Government’s economy and transport secretary Ken Skates said: “The Llangefni Link Road is a vital development which will not only enable Grŵp Llandrillo Menai to expand, but also improve access to Anglesey Enterpise Zone businesses and support the area to realise its potential for economic growth.

“All of this has been made possible thanks to a close working partnership between Welsh Government, Anglesey County Council, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and is an excellent example of what can be achieved when everyone has the same goal in mind.”
